From application to first inspection, a timeline
Registering a children's home with Ofsted takes longer than most providers expect. Here is what the process actually involves.

Ofsted registration is not a one-off event. It is a sustained process that typically takes between six and twelve months from first application to operational registration. During that period, you will need to demonstrate to Ofsted's satisfaction that your home, your leadership, and your policies are ready.
The application
The first step is the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015 application. This is submitted to Ofsted via their online portal. It requires the full details of the provider, the proposed registered manager, the premises, and the intended purpose of the home.
The Statement of Purpose must be submitted at this stage. This is not a draft. Ofsted will read it carefully, and it will form the basis of your first inspection.
The fit person interview
Once your application is received, Ofsted will schedule a fit person interview with the proposed registered manager. This is a substantive interview conducted by an Ofsted inspector. It covers the manager's experience, qualifications, understanding of the regulatory framework, and their plans for the home.
The fit person interview is where many applications encounter difficulty. Candidates who have not prepared thoroughly, or whose understanding of the regulations is theoretical rather than operational, find the interview challenging.
The premises inspection
Ofsted will also inspect the premises before registration. They will check that the physical environment meets the requirements set out in the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015, including bedroom sizes, communal space, outdoor space, and safety provisions.
The first inspection
Once registered, your first inspection will typically occur within the first twelve months of operation. This inspection will assess the quality of care being delivered against the quality standards in the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015.
Your records will be inspected. Your staff will be spoken to. The young people in the home will be spoken to. Your policies and procedures will be reviewed. Your Statement of Purpose will be held up against what the inspector observes.
The first inspection sets the tone for everything that follows.
